Summary/Abstract: The artide provides the numbers of students who terminate their studies at university and non-university institutions due to health problems and personai ąualities. The results of the research, conducted by the order of the Ministry of Education and Science in 2005, reveal that student wastage by study fields and courses are related to peculiarities of their health and personality. The sampling of the research: 504 students of col-leges; 649 students of universities; 100 lecturers (from four universities, two levels, year 1-3 of bachelor programmes, year 1-2 of master studies, year 1-3 of colleges) and 90 students who terminated their studies at universities and colleges. The results of qualitative and quantitative research revealed the following reasons for termination of studies at higher education institution: success of studies is based on the priority of study programme selection, i.e., the bigger the number of study programmes the students select from, the more often the students point out impairment of their general and mental health as a reason for discontinuation of their studies at higher education institution. The number of selection of study programmes may be associated with students' responsibility: the students, who made their choice from a smaller number of programmes (1-3 programmes), pointed out lack of responsibility as a reason for termination of their studies less frequently, compared to students, who had a choice of 12 or more programmes. According to the students in the research, the main causes for leaving higher education institution are related to peculiarities of their personality and health, i.e. with impairment of their physical and mental health: first year students feel lack of self-confidence, whereas second year students point out their health condition as a factor impeding continuation of their studies. The lecturers state that students terminate their studies because they lack responsibility, whereas, in their opinion, health condition, as a reason for leaving higher education institutions, prevails among master programme students. In order to reduce the extent of students' mental health deterioration, it is importam to individualize work with students, expand availability of equalising courses, provide students from higher education institutions with pedagogical and psychological consultations and establish various self-assistance groups 'Students to students', etc. It is importam to develop and expand competence of learning to learn through integration of various activities.
