Summary/Abstract: This research makes conceptual and methodological contributions to the crisis experienced by the U.S. auto industry in the 2008–2009 downturn, its mainstay being formed by an analysis of the decline in production and sales of motor vehicles, and direct threats to employment in the U.S. auto-parts industry. Our paper contributes to the literature by providing evidence on the diminution of the U.S. automotive manufacturing industry and the reduction of the U.S. motor-vehicle sector and auto-parts industry. The findings of this study have implications for the motor-vehicle assembly and parts manufacturing industry, and the rapid development of the auto-parts trade deficit.
