The study encompasses both sides of the academic activities, i.e. research and education, focusing on the role in knowledge creation. The higher education institutions have a continuously enlarged and concrete involvement in research, innovation and knowledge transfer activities. Simultaneously the academic area has a major role in the people’s education, contributing to the development of new competences and skills for a better knowledge management. Besides these strong points, the authors have identified also some weaknesses and possible improvements. The contribution of this paper consists in emphasising the role of the universities in the knowledge society and in suggesting improvements related to the academic research processes for increasing the universities role in the knowledge society.
