Summary/Abstract: The article first highlights current phenomena of clientelism and corruption in Romania. Subsequently ostensive examples are illustrated, revealing that these are phenomena reaching into the highest political circles. In what follows, historic aspects of clientelism in the Balkans are analyzed, pointing out the special importance it had under the Communist rule. Finally the question is illuminated what influence the European enlargement and integration processes could actually exert on the further course of modernization as well as the developments of clientelism in Southeast Europe.
