Summary/Abstract: The article investigates the relationship between the Bulgarian and European avant-garde through the image of the town. How did Bulgarian artists accept new tendencies? If Italian futurists are particularly interested in the towns lights, speed and sights, if German expressionists are concentrated on the towns social problems and dangers, the Bulgarian artists, ten years later, used the same theme in two different ways. Painters Tzanko Lavrenov or Zlatjo Bojadzhiev remind us, with nostalgia, the image of the Bulgarian Renaissance town and its residents. Sirak Skitniks drawings, Pentco Georgiev s gravures, Chavdar Mutafovs novel Dilettante (1926), Konstantin Konstantinov s and Svetoslav Minkovs novel Sartze v kartonena kutiya (Hart in a cardboard box), (1933) present the modern town and man with their problems, views and states of mind. Between nostalgia for the past, between tradition and the new tendencies, the Bulgarian artists diversify the mosaic of the European avant-garde.
