Summary/Abstract: the aim of this article is to show how Swedish fathers perceive and de ne gender equality and parenthood. Undoubtedly, the Swedish family policy has a signi cant impact on men’s thinking. the article has two parts. firstly, the Swedish family policy is described in a historical perspective. the focus is put on mechanisms that are to enhance men to be more engaged in family life. the second part is based on data gathered through in- depth interviews with Swedish men. the interviews were conducted by the author in September and october 2012 in Stockholm. their analysis shows how fathers de ne parenthood and what problems they have to face in a society that one hand is based on gender equality values, but on the other hand still refers to stereotypical parental and gender roles.
