Summary/Abstract: The central concept of the article is folk theory. In the underlying case study the authors interviewed a representative group of native Estonians, using the field method to determine their active vocabulary of emotions (E. Vainik) and of character traits (H. Orav). The results showed that the most frequently named emotion was viha 'anger, hate', while the most frequent character term was töökas 'hardworking'. The aim of the article is, first, to give an overview of the Estonian vocabulary of emotions and character traits, and second, to analyse the possible connections between viha 'anger, hate' and töökas 'hardworking' on the basis of folk theory.
