Summary/Abstract: Sarajevo is widely known as the place of Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination in 1914, which triggered the First World War. However, the city and its eventful history are fairly unknown. Sarajevo was founded in 1462. It is the only major city in the Balkans which preserved its (contested) Ottoman heritage. Moreover, it is one of the rare cities in Europe where members of four religious communities lived together over a period of almost 500 years: Moslems, Catholics, Orthodox and Jews. The history of this multicultural city is surrounded by myths. The main questions of the article are: How was the cohabitation of the four communities practiced? When and why did their mutual relationship change?
