Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the heroines of Anka Grupińska’s book It is "Most difficult to Meet Lilith" – Hassidic women living in Israel in ultra-Orthodox neighbourhoods, including those who have chosen to leave the community, and thus abandon their religion. The figure of Lilith, a she-demon who appears in the title and is invoked by both Grupińska and by one of the interviewees, represents in my discussion a female figure who rebels against her role in ultraorthodox society as defined by religion and the traditions based on it. She allows us to see in the cited stories – some of the dozens told by Grupińska – the ways in which those featured in them manoeuvre various prohibitions and dictates, in an attempt to find a place where they can try to achieve self-determination. A place where Eve meets Lilith.
