Summary/Abstract: The Czech Republic’s presidency of the European Council and the Council of the EU ended on July 1, 2009. In this article, the author gives an overview and analysis of the country’s performance during the heavily disputed six months. He offers circumstances and context in which the presidency was held, its priorities and issues surrounding it. Finally, the author offers three possible interpretations of the time the Czech Republic spent heading the EU, concluding that it served as a mobilizing factor for the country’s civil service and diplomacy and strengthened informal contacts and networks at the EU level which the Czech negotiators could benefit from in the following years.
