Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is a critical presentation of Eric Voegelin’s ideas about Western civilization’s political order and its cultural conditions. Voegelin points at two main sources of the Western order - „symbolizations” – pneumatic in Israel and noetic in Hellas. Along with the Roman organization of power they represent the foundation that created the Western civilization and still determines the stability of its political order. The author of “Order and History” emphasizes the importance of a balance between cultural factors that determine the durability and vitality of the West. On the other hand, he points at risks that are associated with the aporias of the symbolic articulation of order. The article is an outline of Voegelin’s diagnosis. This paper is a result of the research project no. 2013/09/N/HS5/00057 funded by the National Science Center.
