Summary/Abstract: When in 1986 Beck used the concept of ‘risk society’, it became clear that the world began to perceive the issue of security in a different way. A new way of perception of this issue – as a value lost in the postmodernity – has consequences for the urban space where, according to the observations of sociologists, culture of fear develops. It is not difficult to find examples of culture of fear in the city – the ubiquitous cameras (hence the term ‘spaces of control’), the phenomenon of ghettoization, the anonymity (even neighbors are stranger) and the irresponsibility for space. The author searches for causes, analyzes manifestations of the culture of fear, and reflectson the importance of this phenomenon for the public space.
