Summary/Abstract: National question was of great importance during the existence of the Yugoslav state. The article deals with the question of the importance of 1971 Census for interethnic relations, and how the Yugoslav Communist League (YCL) defined the most controversial phenomenon which occurred during the process (citizens declaring their national identity as Yugoslav, Muslim, or according to regional affiliation). The article uses sources from the Archives of Yugoslavia, the Croatian State Archives, the press and relevant literature.
