Summary/Abstract: Occupational burn-out is a response to continually occurring stressful situations, typical for the working-place. It is accepted that work overload, psychical stress, heated disputes and conflicts within the working environment constitute the principal causes of the phenomenon. The article’s objective was to identify and evaluate the process of occupational burn-out among the nursing personnel employed in „Hospicjum Palium”, at the Palliative Medicine Department, and in Domestic Hospice. The study also aimed at revealing specific stressors, influencing occupational burn-out development in the studied groups. The study was conducted between 15.01 and 10.03., 2013, involving a group of 30 nurses employed in „Hospicjum Palium”, at the Palliative Medicine Department, the „Przemienienie Pañskie” University Hospital, and at Domestic Hospice in Poznañ. The respondents were divided into two subgroups, with reference to their working place location. The first subgroup included the nursing personnel of the Palliative Medicine Department – 19 persons while the second one comprised the nursing personnel of Domestic Hospice – 11 persons. The survey questionnaire was found free from disqualifying errors. A diagnostic survey was employed, using an appropriate questionnaire which included questions from the Maslach Burnout Inventory. This enabled an analysis of the elements of three-dimensional theory of occupational burn-out. Purposive sampling was applied in the study. The U Mann-Whitney test was applied in description of variables. The relationship between variables was studied using the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. In determining significance p < 0.05 value was adopted. Analyses were conducted using STATISTIKA 6.0 software package. The research confirmed earlier observations of the occupational burn-out. Correlation between the burn-out’s symptoms, level of education, age, and intensity of exposure to psychical stress were also substantiated. Low remuneration for the work performed was found to be the strongest cause of stress.
