Summary/Abstract: In my article I am dealing with problem of psychosocial determinants of obesity, anorexia and muscle dysmorphy. These disorders affect more and more people in the world, especially in countries of Western civilization. I emphasize the socio-cultural background of these disorders, especially the role of the social environment and media. The ideal of beauty advertised by the media is unattainable for most people. In this context it becomes extremely important for women to have low weight and for men to achieve muscular figure. This unattainable ideal arouses frustration and powerlessness in many people, resulting in low selfesteem and a decrease in life satisfaction, and in addition it leads to the development of the aforementioned disorders.
