Summary/Abstract: This article touches upon some specific problems in the field of religious genre concerning academic visual appearance and the stylistics of the icons by Stefan Ivanov (1875-1951). Apart from his other works, primarily portraits, the artist has also painted icons and frescoes for more than 40 years. It is important to mention that Stefan Ivanov has created images of saints in a bit different manner from his teachers Ivan Markvichka and Anton Mitov. He has a preference for an expression of psychological characteristics and the emotions. The article introduces to the audience a few unpublished icons by Stefan Ivanov. Each icon uncovers essential artistic devices about the creation of a sacral image in relation with a good knowledge of perspective drawing and humans body anatomy. The artist paints icons with oil colours on canvas using all light and shade effects for shaping the image more plastic and true to life. The article also affects some special features of the human face in his portraits putting together with the faces of saints in the icons.
