Summary/Abstract: Jan Drzeżdżon in his Twarz Smętka described people’s behaviour in a comic and grotesque manner, using most sophisticated means, like onirism, fabulousness and ancient language – the ancestors’ intact language remembered from the years of childhood. He described the traps of evil lurking for humans, the evil that the Kashubians named Smętk, the vicious, cruel ghost sucking lifeblood from his victims. As the result of his action a human being becomes a dry empty shell, becomes no one. Drzeżdżon gives a warning of the destroying power of Smętk. Drzeżdżon advised nurturing and preserving good memories, tradition and culture, without those we simply do not exist. He focused on the ethnic aspects, on the roots and the influence that our original social environment had on our personalities. Twarz Smętka is a universal treatise full of wise metaphors and warnings which we should benefit from, just like from a lifegiving wellspring.
