Summary/Abstract: Silk industry has represented one of the key industries of Šumperk economy until the 1990s. Despite this, the topic has been reflected in history and regional works only a little up till the present. Among other things, the late establishment of this industry in the town’s economy has might played a role. First silk factories began to work here in the middle of the 19th century in connection to adverse situation of silk industry in Vienna which represented the main centre of this industry in the monarchy until that time. The transfer of industry into province areas enabled enlargement and modernisation of production. This idea came in the mind of Viennese entrepreneur Carl Giani who bought a silk mill in Šumperk in 1903, where he subsequently started the production of ecclesiastical fabrics but primarily upholstery and decorative fabric, of which tradition has been preserved here until the beginning of the new millennium. The presented study shows the development of the Giani family’s enterprise and through this example it points out the crucial problems of the Šumperk silk industry until the year 1945. The emphasis is given on the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic, when the essential transformation of the position of the textile industry in the national economy took place.
