Summary/Abstract: The present article analyzes the problem of time as a kind of irreversible, linear, and causal sequence of events. Such chain of eventsis strongly manifested in the cultural, historical and linguistic world view of the German culture in the concept “The Past”. Thisconcept is understood as a constituent of the integral concept of time. The concept of “The Past” is approached as one of the basiccomponents inherent to the literary works of the modern German writer Bernhard Schlink. The authors of the paper assume thatB. Schlink’s novel “The Weekend” (2008) is based on the idea of impossibility to overcome the painful past. A narrative motif of thetime as a kind of a “strainer” is variously reflected in the destinies of the novel’s characters. For Jörg, who is a protagonist of the novel“The Weekend”, this motif has the nature of some “historical present”. It hinders his progression beyond the frames of his personal“past” (a metaphor “Zelle”). This phenomenon is based on his conviction of the right choice of employed revolutionary methods.
