Summary/Abstract: Characteristic features of A. D. Kantemir’s translation of Horace’s “Epistles” are studied in the article. This translation is one of thelargest and most complete works of the author’s literary contributions. The article describes the structure of the translation in focus(Dedication, Preface, Horace’s biography, the translation itself, multiple comments, and a list of the works conducted by Horace). Italso presents comparative examples of the Russian and Latin texts and analyzes the author’s comments on the conducted translation.Characteristic features of the translation include: some russification of the Latin author, which does not prevent understanding ofparticular characteristics of the ancient Roman world, and excessive redundancy, which increases the volume of the Russian text ifcompared to the Latin one. Comments, made by Kantemir on his translation, contain a lot of information on Horatian world: fromRoman dishes to the interpretations of ancient philosophies. A. D. Kantemir translated Horace’s “Epicleles” without rhymed verses’employment with frequent relocation of verses to the next line. This phenomenon can be explained by his orientation on the experienceof ancient Italian translators.
