Summary/Abstract: The author seeks to demonstrate that the old Polish culture became an absorbant and multidirectional, and as a result, creative eclecticism. The old Polish culture was distinguished by its ability of taking over different impulses and uniting them in a common crucible of original adaptation. That eclecticism was a consequence of cultural openness, non-xenophobic comportment, tolerance and deeply democratic orientation. Therefore, it was able to demonstrate its skillful ability to assimilate both Mediterranean and Oriental cultures. From the 16th to the 18th century the main characteristic of the old Polish culture was Sarmatianism. It left its specific imprint on the culture and mentality of the Poles, both in the positive and negative sense, which remained alive even now.
