Summary/Abstract: The famous hesychast controversy has an extremely important role in nowadays life of the Church, that is, to bring to our attention practical missionary modalities modeled after the Palamite one. The 14th century has represented, for the history of the Church and of theology, the confrontationbetween the Byzantine doctrine and the Latin thought. It is necessary tohave the most through and correct understanding of the so-called ‘Palamite theology’ and of the essence of the philosophical thinking of then and now,in order to maintain a genuine and spiritually prolific dialogue between the Church and the modern world. The conflict between the mystical dimension(the theoria) and the rationalist, intellectualist, one is more visible and stronger than ever. The secularism is a historical and actual fact that cannot be denied. We consider that the writings of Saint Gregory Palamas, under the form of sermons, homilies and letters, in answer to the attacks against the Athonite hesychast tradition coming from some rationalists and philosophers, can represent a source of inspiration for the Orthodox Churchin the contemporary missionary-pastoral and dialogic-ecumenical context.
