Nachman’s Blumental’s “Verter un vertlekh fun khurbn-tkufe” – a Linguistic Analysis

Summary/Abstract: This article is a preliminary attempt to describe the wartime Yiddish vocabulary. The linguistic material was taken from Nachman Blumental’s glossary Verter un vertlekh fun khurbn-tkufe, which is a painstakingly prepared, alphabetically arranged collection of words and phrases that were added to the Yiddish vocabulary during the Holocaust. The sociolinguistic methods of examining the vocabulary proposed by the author can provide researchers with a deepened analysis of social and linguistic determinants of a peculiar sociolect formed within the Yiddish language in an extreme situation of threat and enslavement. Such an analysis could be useful from the point of view of interdisciplinary research into the Holocaust.
