A story of treachery: the life of honvéd major Manó Balázs

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the life of the one-time commander of the 12th battalion of the Hungarian defence forces, major Manó Balázs. It describes his military career until November 27, 1848, when the officer was arrested for high treason, then dragged out from the courtroom during his trial and executed by mob law. Even though both the public and historians has regarded Balázs as a traitor, according to contemporary sources the charges were not proven. In Austrian sources, there are no traces of Balázs's treachery, while the events he was held responsible for, namely the disarmament of Erdővidék by the enemy, took place only after the death of the ill-fated major. The paper also discusses the events at Háromszék and the fate of Manó Balázs's family.
