Summary/Abstract: Rural populations, especially farmers and agricultural workers, are marginalized both politically and intellectually. In Poland, these two groups comprise one quarter of the population. Class relations in the countryside have undergone significant changes since 1989. Among the many factors influencing them are attitudes towards work and labour relations. They can function as important cultural diacritics in the process of making identity and creating social divisions. Fieldwork data from arurallocal community in Dziekanowice in the region of Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) serve as an illustration of wider social and cultural processes, which have been taking place together with the expansion of capitalist modes of production in Central Europe.
