HOUSEHOLD CONSUMPTION AND SAVING DYNAMICS IN BULGARIA 2001 – 2015

Summary/Abstract: Household consumption and saving are among the most important economic indicators, closely related to both the short-run fluctuations as well as the long-run development of every national economy. This paper presents an analysis of the dynamics of these two variables in Bulgaria over the past 15 years. The focus is on the main trends at the macro level, the internal structure, and the factors influencing consumption and saving. The results show a strong impact of the 2009 recession on the two variables, as well as the weak effects of financial development and changes in the rates of return, which can be attributed to the relatively low level of disposable income.
