Summary/Abstract: Cultural and educational activity of the archive is a complex field of work that allows great creativity but it does not allow omissions. One of the most common aspects of cultural/educational activity of the archive and promotion of the archival materials to the public are archival exhibitions. The role and importance of archival exhibitions are manifold. With exhibitions the archives bring attention to their existence, to the importance of the archival materials and their preservation. Through exhibitions the archives cultivate the knowledge about the archive, but also the knowledge about the past. By educating a large number of population through exhibitions of the archival materials, the archives destroy stereotypes and historical myths, and both the individual and the society acquire a positive attitude towards history as of an amount of the rise and fall of one people, community and state. The exhibitions are mostly jubilees, celebrating important dates but they can also be promotional with the objective of presenting the work and history of certain institutions, events and persons. The promotional role of the exhibitions can, through a selection or favor of certain themes, support certain political of ideological attitude. Exhibitions of the archival materials are the image of time in which they originated, so though them political or ideological needs of one society can be perceived. More than six decades long tradition of the exhibitions of the archival materials in Serbia, testifies about the efforts put in, varied quality, various tendencies, but also about the constant tries to draw public attention and to secure good publicity to the archival activity. The archives today are dealing with greater challenges. The accessibility of information through a computer technology draws away visitors from coming to classical exhibition. That is why the archives in the world, and in Serbia, are using new possibilities of those new technologies. Through their web presentations, virtual exhibitions, PPT presentations and similar forms of communication promote their institutions, materials and themes which are processed through exhibitions. What is becoming not only a trend but a necessity of contemporary world is adapting of the archival activity to the liking and needs of the consumers, which means constant transforming of the archives from institutions of close type, unavailable to the public, to open institution, that are available and that offer their materials, education and information to contemporary man.
