Summary/Abstract: In Turkish traditional grammars, adjectives are usually classified by using semantic criteria. In classifications, adjectives are generally divided into two main classes: qualitative adjectives and determinative adjectives. Determinative adjectives are examined in four separate classes: demonstrative adjectives, interrogative adjectives, numeral adjectives and indefinite adjectives. Although there is a different classification in linguistic grammars and syntactic criteria are used, the criteria used for this classification are not explicitly expressed. The aim of this study is to classify adjectives in accordance with compatibility and mutual exclusion criteria of functional linguistics. After setting forth how the adjectives are studied in traditional grammars and linguistic grammars, we made a different classification in three classes: a class of adjectives, a class of nominal modalities and a class of numerals. We showed how these classes enter into relations with other classes. We also examined the role of adjectives in attributive connective syntax. In Turkish, different methods are used in attributive connective constructions. Direct connection is a method used very often. Adjectives, such as nouns, do not need a verb for a direct connection; they are determined by predicative modalities when they predicate. In verbal connective syntax, the connection is realized directly by a verb or by a verb and a conjunction. Finally, we examined the syntactic functions of adjectives and revealed the attributive function and circumstantial function.
