Summary/Abstract: Gołdap – a small town near the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast – has beenstruggling with a number of problems such as the ongoing processes of society aging andmigration, unemployment, low activity of the inhabitants, or historically conditioneddefects in the functional and spatial structure, which are a major challenge for the cityauthorities. To counteract negative phenomena, the authorities decided to use localpotential – environmental values, and changing the character of commune fromagricultural to recreational. Numerous investments have been realized thanks to the EUfunds. Aim of this paper is to analyze the transformations that have taken place in thefunctional and spatial structure of the city as a result of the use of funds from theEuropean Union. The study made it possible to evaluate changes in the urban tissue,their impact on the organization of space, as well as identify development trends inGołdap.
