Summary/Abstract: The article considers the uses of second person singular pronoun forms as linguistic means of manipulation at the level of the utterance, which may or may not include the mechanism of generalization. In the article the two forms are reviewed as linguistic means for achieving manipulative effects at the level of the utterance. The former can include or not the mechanism of generalization. In the first case they encode an interpretation of a a recurrent and generalised situation, while in the second they express the perceptions and feelings of a speaker associated with a specific, referentially anchored situation, in which she or he is participating as perceptions and feelings of the listener. In deciding which of the two versions of the manipulative means of expression to use the speaker is guided by his or her communicative intentions, by the immediate context or by peculiar features of the communicative situation, as well as by her or his personal attitude to the encoded event.
