Swearing as a subtype of (linguistic) vulgarity

Summary/Abstract: Swearing, as a linguistic phenomenon, has remained outside the focus of linguistic research. In the current article we will try to define the communicative function of different types of swearing in spoken discourse and contrast them with some expressions that seemingly closely resemble swearing. The specific cultural dimensions of the phenomenon and the emotional concepts activated in this type of communication are discussed in the context of several speech communities.
