Summary/Abstract: Since the time of the Ancient Greeks, citizens have elected government representatives - an elite group to manage public affairs. This form of governmental democracy provided leaders legitimacy on which they based the validity of their rule. After all, the basic idea behind democracy is that the people will decide the character of the government and its direction with their vote. However, the reality of democracies around the world illustrates a divergence from this ideal – that the people may not be deciding a government’s integrity or direction.
