Summary/Abstract: The characters’ experience of remorse underlies, as a leitmotif, the narratives in Guimaraes Rosa’s ‘The Third Bank of the River’, (“First Stories”, 1962) and Autran Dourado’s episode called ‘A Family Affair’ (1970). The analysis offered in this article focuses upon intertextuality in the literary output of the writers of Minas Gerais. More specifically, the author studies the manner in which each of the writers incorporates in their texts the tropes of manifestation—and expiation—of blame against the backdrop of a river. The river, the space of ambivalence, the master of life and death, carries out its creative and destructive functions within the relationships among the characters of each narrative.
