Summary/Abstract: The global cultural and economic transformations in today's world have provoked a new interest in ancient Asian traditions, among them in the Chinese and Confucian philosophical and ethical legacy. Referring to recent publications this paper endeavours to explain the pluralist context of China's ancient culture in order to distinguish its major ethical trends like daoism, mohism, legalism and chan Buddhism. It is preceded with a brief introduction to Confucianism whose ethical concepts will be presented in a separate study.
