Summary/Abstract: The programmatic concept was rarely associated with the fugato imitation and thefugue genre in general because of the antagonism existing between the subjective, literaturizeddimension of the former and the objectivity and rigor characterizing the fugato discourse andtechnique. Nevertheless, the creation of twentieth century composers features works in which the twoapparently irreconcilable phenomena – the fugue and programmatism – are found combined inproductions that bear strong marks of originality.
