Summary/Abstract: Jan Thon (1886–1973) was one of the few librarians who devoted himself not only to work in the library but also to library sciences as an academic discipline. In the history of Czech library sciences, the twenty years between the wars were an exceptional period, when the field operated similarly to the way it did in other European countries. This is attested to by the establishment of the Czechoslovak Society for Library Sciences (Československá společnost knihovědná) in early 1930. Among its founders from the ranks of Zdeněk Tobolka (1874–1949) was Jan Thon, Docent of Library Sciences at Charles University, one of the first librarians to hold a post there. In addition to being an occasion to consider the importance of Thon, the 95th anniversary of the Public Libraries Act also provides a welcome opportunity to discuss the current state and future of Czech library sciences. The article is, in addition, an appeal to go beyond the existing positivistic methodology in Czech library sciences and to come closer to the current interdisciplinary way of looking at book culture and the history of the book.
