Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we would like to delve further into the idea of whether “defensive” ethnic nationalism and the ambition for autonomy that is derived from it can be justified. How legitimate are the two ways in which the manifestation of nationalism is perceived: on one side, the legitimate fight for something (autonomous self-determination), and on the other, the legitimate fight against something (against minority autonomy). My governing intention was to point out the limits inherent in the ideal of the nation-state in the context of today’s multicultural environment. In the paper, we argue that ethnic nationalism will only ever cease when a genuine postethnic pluralism surfaces, in which the dominant cultures and nations assume responsibility for preserving the values that stem from life as a minority, aid in strengthening identity and guarantee that the need for self-identification in the community is fulfilled. This form of multiculturalism will most likely come about via a reconciliation with cultural pluralism, when it is recognized that there is value in cultural difference.
