Summary/Abstract: The changes in the last twenty years within the scope of Polish usage dictionaries have several reasons which occurred in a characteristic concourse. Very significant is the change in linguists’ attitude to language function in social life and therefore the function of language correctness: structuralist and purposeful attitude noticeable in Słownik poprawnej polszczyzny (The Polish usage dictionary) (by W. Doroszewski, H. Kurkowska) has been replaced by cognitive and valuable attitude, noticeable in Nowy słownik poprawnej polszczyzny PWN (The New Polish usage dictionary PWN). Simultaneously, publishing possibilities have changed too: monopoly and homogeneity before 1989 have been superseded by multi publishing and diversity. These changes resulted in the creation of normative dictionaries adjusted by level and range to different groups of addressees. Aside from scientific dictionaries popular ones are being published as well as those for pupils. Many dictionaries are commercial but still a lot of them fulfill their mission in taking care of the shape of the Polish language. The essential content’s change occurrs by the introduction of determinations on two levels of norm. The changes are to be judged rather positively.
