Summary/Abstract: The author of the article studies the term of a lexicographic unit. It has been pointed out that in historical lexicography in comparison with contemporary lexicography (which describes a contemporary state of language) it is very often more difficult to establish what is (should be) a lexicographic unit. At the examples from Słownik języka polskiego XVII i 1. połowy XVIII wieku (Dictionary of the Polish Language of the 17th and the first half of the 18th Century), the author shows typical situations in which may occur difficulties in establishing a relation between lexicographic units and language units. The attention was drawn to difficulties in establishing if the lexical elements which are present in historical material, belong to the language described in the dictionary (for example, the problem of words- -quotations, individualisms, occasionalisms, secondary usage of proper nouns).
