Summary/Abstract: The ongoing reform and consolidation of the eurozone is seeking to make it the hub of European integration, even at the expense of EU cohesion. The current Polish strategy towards eurozone reform—as reflected in taking steps effective so far to retain EU cohesion, which is often referred to as “keeping the foot in the door”—is a short-term one, untenable in the medium and the long run. What is needed is developing a proactive strategy of Poland’s accession to the eurozone: 1) staying out, Poland risks finding itself at the peripheries of European integration, all the more so as the present exceptional position of being an attractive partner (especially for Germany) will not go on forever, but will rather weaken in step with growing eurozone consolidation; 2) the more consolidated the eurozone, the more difficult it will be to join, with membership criteria getting more stringent and more involved, and already now extending far beyond the well known economic convergence criteria.
