Summary/Abstract: After a successful socialist revolution there is a choice between opposite alternatives: socialism and statism — a society characterized by the concentration in one body of both the power of economic exploitation and of political oppression of the workers. The concept of self-determination is crucial for the socialist alternative, and it involves principles of rationality, free will, and reciprocity. A new form of democracy that rests on these principles has two dimensions. One is participatory democracy as a movement and method of self-education. The other is industrial democracy — a social institution that extends human rights from political to economic life. In industrial democracy members of a working community have the right to take part in decision-making in all phases of production (planning, realization, control, and distribution of the results of work). Human beings are not only citizens and producers but also consumers. Socialism thus far has not developed an adequate theory that solves the problems of both the satisfaction of human needs and of the reconciliation of human beings and nature. Nach einer erfolgreichen, sozialistischen Revolution ergibt sich die Wahl zwischen zwei entgegengesetzten Alternativen: Sozialismus und Planwirtschaft, eine Gesellschaftsform, die dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, daß die Macht sowohl der wirtschaftlichen Ausbeutung als auch der politischen Unterdrückung der Arbeiterklasse zentral gelenkt wird. Der Begriff von Selbstbestimmung ist entscheidend für die sozialistische Alternative und umfaßt die Prinzipien der Vernunft, des freien Willens und der Gegenseitigkeit. Eine neue Form der Demokratie, die auf diesen Prinzipien beruht, hat zwei Dimensionen: Die eine ist eine partizipatorische Demokratie als eine Bewegung und Methode der Selbsterziehung. Die zweite ist eine industrielle Demokratie — eine soziale Institution, welche die Menschenrechte vom politischen Leben auf das wirtschaftliche Leben ausdehnt.
