Summary/Abstract: The Last Judgement, a widely spread iconographical theme in the Romanian frescoes of Byzantine influence, illustrates the Orthodox eschatology focusing on the after-life destiny of the good and the wicked. The moral and the theological accents are intertwined with historical presences that are judged both from the point of view of the true faith and from that of being friends or foes of the Romanians. This paper underlines the presence and the meaning of the social-historical aspects found in frescoes depicting the Last Judgement and the Ship of Christianity from the monasteries of Hurezi and Voroneț, between the 14th and 17th centuries. These aspects highlight the changes taking place at that time and the perils threatening national and Orthodox identity.
