Summary/Abstract: „Running Away from Yourself” or the Loneliness and Autarchy of the Modern Man. In our times, the individual – the human being disconnected from any loving relationships towards his neighbours – seems to replace the person. By an individualistic behaviour, people of our postmodern times prefer their own personal ethic, emptied of divine or ecclesial authority. They seek an unconstrained freedom and they tend to decline responsibility of their acts. For many individuals, independence is the leitmotif of their envisaged ethic behaviour. But this attitude progressively determines dissatisfaction, loneliness and lack of meaning of life itself, so obvious both on a human and social level. In such a world, the message of Christianity remains unchanged: true freedom is only possible in and through God, loneliness disappears through the rapprochement between us and our neighbour – image of God -, while true autonomy is the autonomy of love.
