Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with three main problems: the origin of the discipline "Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge" in the Turkish educational system, the disputes about its nature and obligatory character, the place and significance of the problem of freedom and the human rights in the content of the textbook for 10th class. The accent is put on the connection between the liberal notions of freedom and its religious (Islamic) interpretation.
