Summary/Abstract: Based on a case study of the Department of German Studies at the Sofia University the paper deals with the destruction of academic freedom in Bulgaria in the 1940- 1950s. The paper's sources are both recently found archival documents (papers, plans, statistics, annual reports etc.) and publications on the Bulgarian university education during this period. By means of historical and cultural approach the text researches the follow problems: what were the mechanisms and results of transformations in the university life; how the free will was replaced by administrative and political control over the teaching and science, the pluralistic thinking - b y unification, the academic autonomy-by absolute dependence; what were the reactions of academic staff-who adapted themselves and who tried to resist the regime, who were the dissidents - non-party or communists, men or women; what had happened with the established administrative, scientific and gender inequalities in conditions of non-freedom.
