Summary/Abstract: The article describes the trajectory of my work on narratives over two decades in order to illustrate the ubiquity and variety of roles of narratives in human life. In ethnographic studies of narratives of the Bushmen in Africa storytelling performs an important role in transmitting their culture and providing social bonding necessary for survival in austere environment. In studies of language of patients with aphasia relative preservation of narrative skills despite disruption of language indicates a plight to overcome the deficit and maintain identity. Finally, the narratives of victims of the Holocaust show how one can express or conceal trauma in order to document, understand and forgive.
