Summary/Abstract: Review: Ryszard Koziołek, Ciała Sienkiewicza. Studia o płci i przemocy [‘Sienkiewicz’s bodies. Studies on gender and violence’], Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego, Katowice 2009. Ryszard Koziołek re-evaluates the canonical Polish author by drawing attention to the gender-related determinants of his works. Koziołek’s analysis highlights the concept of écriture masculine – masculine narrative techniques – and focuses on the symbolic language and rhetorical mechanisms behind Sienkiewicz’s writings. The margins of the narrative, he argues, reveal the text’s unconscious. Exploring the subdued language of Sienkiewicz’s emotions, Koziołek points out the author’s literary incarnations. The use of fiction allowed Sienkiewicz to live out his fantasies and complexes. Consequently, his work bears the marks of his personal experience.
