Summary/Abstract: This essay has as a main purpose a new interpretation of Mircea Eliade’s play entitled “Men and Stones” (“Oameni şi pietre”). Taking into consideration the importance of Eliade’s theory of the sacred and the profane, any new reading of this rather unknown work and each attempt to evaluate the implications of these two concepts has to find its adequate context. In “Men and Stones” one essential point is the relationship between the title itself of the text and some ideas expressed in the Koran. Thus Cioran’s belief is confirmed, because this is an example of Eliade’s deliberate choice of placing himself “in the periphery of every religion by profession as well as by conviction.”
