Summary/Abstract: Over the past two decades, New York based photographer, Spencer Tunick, has created over 75 human installations located on every continent. His worldwide fame attracts thousands of volunteers who are willing to take their clothes off in a public space to embody the visions of the controversial artist. The photographs of the naked crowds are spectacular, causing the outrage of part of the public opinion, while the specialized critics avoid the subject. On the one hand, questions regarding the aesthetic value of these performances arise; on the other hand, the extent of the Tunick phenomenon proves the existence of a social need for the exhibition of corporeal identity. The realities of the collective nude seem to foreshadow the ideal status of the globalizing nude.
