“There was a Great Turmoil in these Years.” Interreligious Conflicts and Changes of Rite in Coşnea (1930–1944)

Summary/Abstract: This case study examines the 20th century history of a Greek Catholic community – living on the border of the historical Transylvania and Moldova –, using archival sources and interviews with the locals. My central aim is to show the local effects of historical and political processes and of Romanian and Hungarian nation-building aspirations. The focus of my paper is the period between 1930-44, as this is the period when regular Roman Catholic pastoration started in the community, so changes of rite and interreligious conflicts also date back in this time.
